In view of the introduction of Canada's Bill C-3 that took effect on December 15, 2025, people can now apply for citizenship of Canada through ancestry beyond one generation born outside Canada provided that they are able to prove uninterrupted kinship with a Canadian ancestor. The amendment, which was made following the invalidation of former generation limits by court judgments, has led to an influx of applications, especially by Americans whose ancestors used to migrate from Canada. This situation has created a lot of work for small and big archival institutions in the United States in trying to retrieve historical documents. Also, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is overwhelmed with more than 136,000 citizenship certificate applications.
